Hives are raised bumps on the skin of the horse. According to Dr. William Miller, hives are compressed easily. If pushed down, they will leave behind a fingertip imprint. Hives are usually the reaction to an allergen that has irritated the horse.
  1. Veterinarian

    • Call the vet as soon as possible if an acute hives attack is suspected.

    Cool Water

    • Although not always, hives can causing itching and discomfort for the horse. In this case, cool water can help relieve the itching sensation and remove some of the discomfort.

    Medication

    • Corticosteroids, which are anti-inflammatories, can be used to reduce the size and appearance of hives, according to Dr. Patrick Hensel.
