Instructions
Roll up the bandage so the strings or Velcro attachments are inside the roll. Keep the bandage clean and as flat as possible to avoid wrinkles in the material.
Stand behind your horse and brush out the tail until the hairs are flat, clean and untangled. Pay special attention to the hairs at the top of the tail.
Check the skin around the tail for cuts or tendon spots. Treat any injuries that you find with antiseptic lotion.
Unroll the bandage at least one hand-length and place it above the tail at a 45-degree angle downward. Wrap the bandage around the tail twice to secure the end. Fold the end sticking out the top down and wrap over it a third time.
Continue wrapping the bandage down the tail, applying consistent pressure. Always overlap the previous layer halfway.
Wrap down no more than 8 inches and then work your way back up. Check the entire bandage for wrinkles or uneven pressure.
Fasten the ties so that they are facing outward to avoid irritating the horse. Properly secure the Velcro or strings so the whole bandage does not fall apart.
How to Apply a Horse Tail Bandage
Tail bandages keep the tail neat and clean before a show and during transportation of the horse. It is important to apply the bandage correctly to avoid causing discomfort or loss of circulation to the tail. A properly applied tail bandage remains in place all day.
