Valbazin (generic name: albendazole) is an anthelmintic drug used to treat parasitic infections in animals.
Albendazole is classified as a pregnancy category C drug by the FDA, meaning that there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but studies in animals have shown fetal harm when the drug is administered in doses higher than those recommended for humans.
There are reports of teratogenic effects (cleft palate and limb deformities) in calves born to cows treated with albendazole during pregnancy, therefore it is not recommended for use during pregnancy.
Alternative anthelmintics that are considered safer for use during pregnancy in cattle should be used instead, such as levamisole, ivermectin or moxidectin.
