How is a horse euthanized?

The most common method of euthanizing a healthy horse is through the intravenous administration of a barbiturate, such as sodium pentobarbital or its generic equivalent, pentobarbital sodium. This is typically done by a veterinarian, who will administer the drug into a vein in the horse's neck or leg. The horse will quickly lose consciousness and die peacefully.

In cases of horses that are injured, severely ill, or in pain, the first step is usually to administer a sedative to calm the animal and reduce its anxiety. Once the horse is sedated, the veterinarian can then administer the euthanasia solution.

The use of firearms is not typically recommended as a method of euthanasia, as it can pose risks to both people and animals.
