How to Tie a High Line for a Horse

When you take your horses on a camping trip, the most reliable way of securing them for the night is the high line. The high line allows you to tie more than one horse up at a time while allowing them some freedom. You don't need a lot of equipment either, which means you won't need to burden your horse or bring a pack mule to carry it. A high line limits the impact to the trees and surrounding environment.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate two sturdy trees about 15 feet apart. If you have more than two horses, find a set of trees with an additional 5 feet per additional horse between them.

    • 2

Wrap one end of a cotton rope around one of the trees. You can place a commercial tree saver or a burlap bag between the rope and the tree.

    • 3

Move the rope up the tree until it's about 6 inches taller than the horses.

    • 4

Create a double half hitch by bringing one end under, though the loop, under the rope for a second time, and though the new loop. Tighten the knot.

    • 5

Draw the rope across to the second tree and wrap it once around the tree with a tree saver beneath the rope. Pull on the rope to take up the slack. Create another double half hitch to secure the rope.

    • 6

Pull on the rope in the middle. Undo one end and pull up the slack. Redo the double half hitch.
