How to Twist Stirrup Straps

Many horse riders complain that Western style stirrups, though functional, cause multiple problems for them. Some riders have difficulty fitting their feet into the stirrups, making it hard to maneuver while getting on and off their horses. Also, Western stirrups that lie flat against the horses' sides can injure the riders and increase the chance of the riders losing footing while riding. Twisting or turning stirrups is a long process but, once completed, can reshape the stirrups and stirrup straps permanently.

Place the saddle on a saddle stand. Have a partner turn one of the stirrups around so the strap twists and the stirrup faces the back of the saddle.

    • 2

Turn the other stirrup so the strap twists and the stirrup also faces the back of the saddle. While both stirrups are twisted, run broomsticks through them. Release the broom stick and make sure that it stays put inside the twisted stirrups.

Leave the pole in the stirrups whenever you are not riding with the saddle. This will alter the leather over time and change the way the stirrups point. If the leather does not adjust quickly enough, apply leather conditioning to the stirrups and set the saddle in the sun with the stirrups twisted until it dries
