How to Put a Hackamore Bit Together

A headstall is a necessary tool for controlling your horse during a ride, but many horses object to traditional bits. A hackamore bit is a style of bridle that fits over the horse's nose, rather than in its mouth, and allows you to control the animal without putting pressure on sensitive gum tissue. Putting a hackamore bit together and fitting it correctly on your horse is essential for a safe ride.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the hackamore bit on a flat surface with the large rings at the top of the rope nose band near the top edge of the table. A hackamore bit is made of a thin piece of rope between two metal S-shaped bars, which fit around the nose of the horse for guidance and control.

Unscrew the flat screw on the outside of each loop at the bottom of the left and right side of the head stall and slip the free end of the loops through the top rings on the hackamore. Close the loop and tighten the screws to secure the bit to the headstall.

    • 3

Attach the curb chain to the smaller metal circles at the top of the hackamore. The curb chain rests under the chin, tightening as the rider pulls on the reins. Buckle the curb chain on the loosest hole to allow for adjustment once the headstall is on the horse.

Clip the reins to the rings on the bottom of the bit's metal shanks and slide the bit over the horse's head. Adjust the long straps on the head stall so the rope nose band rests approximately 6 inches above the top of the nostril and tighten the curb chain until you can fit one finger between the chain and the underside of the horse's chin.
