How to Set Up Cross Ties in a Barn for Miniature Horses

Cross ties are a means of restraining a horse while it is being groomed, handled or transported. The horse is led into a corridor, and ties are clipped to the ring on each side of the halter. For safety reasons, cross ties should not be placed so low that a horse can get a leg over them. There should also be a quick release mechanism in case the horse panics when tied up. Cross ties for miniature horses must be correctly positioned to allow for their small stature.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the area where you wish to tie the horse. It should be placed in an area with strong supports like posts or walls on each side where the ties will attach. The floor should be dirt or covered with a non-slip surface such as rubber mats for added grip.

    • 2

Measure the height of your largest miniature horse at the withers. Most standard miniatures are less than 34 inches. Mark a point on the supports about 2 inches higher than the largest horse's withers. Screw the tie up rings firmly into position at the marked points.

Select your cross ties. Use ties with safety release latches that allow your horse to release quickly in an emergency.

    • 4

Attach the cross ties to the rings. Pull the two ties towards each other. The two ties should barely meet in the middle so the horse won't be able to get tangled when tied.
