How to Put on a French Cribbing Collar

Cribbing is a horse behavior that leads to many health issues. When it cribs, the horse grasps the edge of any thin object such as the stall gate, feed containers or window frames with its mouth. The horse bites the edge and inhales large amounts of air while arching its neck and pulling on the object. This behavior causes dental fracture and wear as well as intestinal gas. One way to prevent cribbing is to use a French cribbing collar. This leather and metal collar allows the horse to breathe naturally while preventing the horse from inhaling deeply and arching at the same time.

Instructions

    • 1

Buckle one side of the leather strap to the metal Y-shaped portion of the collar. You may need to adjust the buckle later.

    • 2

Wrap the collar around the horse's neck just behind the jaw.

    • 3

Position the metal notch against the front of the horse's neck at the throat latch. This is the portion of the horse's throat where the head and neck join.

    • 4

Buckle the second strap to hold the collar in place. Allow room for two fingers between the horse's neck and the collar. The metal notch gives the horse room to breathe, but prevents it from expanding the throat latch.
