How to Tie a Homemade Horse Halter

Halters are necessary for moving your horse around your property. A halter fits over the horse's head, allowing you to guide it without the need for a bridle. Halters are made of many different materials, from leather and silver to plain rope. A rope halter is the simplest to make at home and the easiest to customize to your exact specifications.

Instructions

    • 1

Melt both ends of the rope over an open flame. Squeeze the hot ends between your gloved fingertips to compress the rope and prevent fraying.

    • 2

Make a small circle near the end of the rope. Double the rope over on itself and force the folded end through the loop. Pull on the loop to create a knot.

    • 3

Slide your hands up the rope approximately 20 inches, and tie a second knot as directed in Step 2. The rope between the knots rests over your horse's nose, while the knots are pulled down under its chin to hold the halter in place.

Slip the nose piece over the bridge of the nose, centering it between the bottom of the eye and your horse's nostril. Slide the long end of the rope over your horse's head and lay it just behind its ears. Feed the end of the rope through the two looped knots under your horse's chin, pulling the end firmly to keep the halter tight as you walk your horse.
