The Disadvantages of Cordura Saddles

Cordura is the brand name of a nylon, all-weather, highly durable fabric made by Invista. The fabric is often used in place of leather for some -- or all -- of the components of a saddle. Cordura saddles tend to be lighter and less expensive than traditional leather saddles. However, there are several disadvantages to this type of saddle.
  1. Lifespan

    • Cordura saddles generally do not have the lifespan of traditional leather saddles that have been well-cared for. Cordura is tough, but it is still a fabric and will wear out sooner than leather saddles. Fabric can also tear and have to be sewn. Cordura might be comparable to cheap, low-quality leather saddles, but it has not been shown to withstand the test of time the way a high-quality leather saddle will.

    Appearance

    • Cordura saddles are not known for their classic appearance. They are not commonly considered acceptable tack in the show ring or competitions. If you purchase a Cordura saddle and decide you want to compete, you will most likely need to find a more traditional saddle. This is especially true if your Cordura saddle is brightly colored or has a non-traditional pattern.

    Saddle Quality

    • As with leather saddles, not all Cordura saddles are created equally. Cordura allows manufacturers to build saddles for less money compared with leather. Quality Cordura saddles typically are half the price of traditional, quality leather saddles. While some companies produce high-quality Cordura saddles that do not skimp on quality, some are very poorly constructed and made from substandard materials. A well-constructed Cordura saddle should not feel any differently to ride in than a leather saddle, but some riders may feel less secure because the fabric is not as rigid as leather.

    All-Cordura vs. Partial

    • Some saddles are completely constructed of Cordura; others are partially made of the material. Generally speaking, saddles that have a leather or suede seat and jockey have longer lifespans and are more durable than those made exclusively of Cordura. It is best to check the reputation and construction of every saddle you consider prior to purchasing.
