How to Know if Your Snaffle Bit Is Backwards?

For riders to communicate clearly with their horses while riding, their tack has to be in good working order. Trying to ride a horse with your bit turned backwards will quickly elicit a negative response from your horse. It will also prevent your bridle from fitting the horse properly and the cheek pieces will not lay flat against the horse's cheek. Determining if your snaffle bit is facing the right direction is a straight-forward process.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick up the snaffle bit by the rings on either side of the mouthpiece. Hold it straight out in front of you.

    • 2

Fold the bit backwards towards your body, bringing the rings together.

    • 3

Look at the bit. If the rings have gone together smoothly and the mouthpiece folded easily, the bit is facing the right direction. If the bit did not fold backwards easily and the rings are arching away from one another when it is folded, it is backwards.
