How to Calculate Saddle Height

If you are in the market for a new western saddle, you need to take a few key measurements to ensure a good fit and a secure ride. The size of the seat itself is important, since a saddle that is too big will not give you the security you need, while a saddle that is too small will be cramped and uncomfortable. But the height of the saddle is an important consideration as well, since a high cantle can enhance your security and help you sit more deeply in the saddle.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the saddle on a stable stand or rack. It is always easier to get an accurate measurement when the saddle is sitting on a stable surface.

    • 2

Locate the center of the pommel, under the saddle horn and directly above the hole at the front of the saddle seat. Use a measuring tape to measure from this location to the top of the cantle, which is the back of the saddle seat. Measure to the stitching in the very center of the cantle.

Find the deepest part of the saddle seat. Use a ruler to measure the distance from that deepest part of the seat. This is the height of the saddle.
