How to Make a Rope Halter Loop

Whether you are training a foal or working with a well-seasoned horse, rope halters are more effective in getting the horse to respond. Rope halters put pressure on the horses sensitive poll and nose areas. This increase in pressure allows the handler to get faster, correct responses from the horse. When a person is accustomed to the simple buckle of the traditional nylon halter, tying a rope halter loop to secure the halter on the horse's head can be a challenge.

Instructions

Thread the loop of the rope halter with the tail end. Work from the left side of the horse with the nose band securely on the horse's nose. The tail end of the rope halter will be in your right hand and the loop end will be in your left hand. Guide the tail through the loop end and pull it snug across the top of the horse's poll, so the rope halter is securely fit on the horse's head.

Run the tail end of the rope halter under the loop towards the horse's eye and pull it through. This will create a loop to lace the tail through again, towards the horse's neck, creating the knot or rope halter loop.

Pull the knot snug and adjust it for the correct fit on the horse's head. This loop knot will stay secure on the horse until you remove it. The halter may need to be readjusted for snugness when loosened by pulling during training.
