How to Tie a Saddle Bag on a Horse

Having a saddle bag gives you the freedom to bring along essential items when setting out on a trail ride by horse back, whether it is a long or short excursion. A saddle bag or pack enables you to carry water, snacks, a cell phone or horse-related items. Most saddles are equipped with features that allow for attachment of a saddle bag or pack.

Instructions

    • 1

Saddle the horse. The saddle bag will then attach to the saddle. Set the saddle bag on top of the saddle and it should hang evenly.

    • 2

Find the D-rings on the horse's saddle. D-rings are usually located on the left side of the cantle on English saddle. The cantle is the highest part at the back of the saddle. On Western or Austrailian saddles, the D-rings are usually found on either side of the cantle.

Tie or clip the saddle bag to the D-rings. Most saddle bags have clips, but you may have to tie it. Make sure the bag is secured tightly, but loose enough so you can remove it later. If you need to, pull the straps along the sides until they meet and then tie them.
