How to Measure a Close Contact Saddle for a Horse

A close contact English horseback riding saddle is measured using its seat size. A close contact saddle is a type of hunter saddle that has a flatter seat design in order to provide a better platform for jumping. Close contact saddles are ideal for riders who perform in both huntseat and jumping riding events, especially hunter over fences. In order for the saddle to be used properly, it needs to be the right size for the rider and horse.

Determine the size of the seat by reading the measuring tape. The size should be somewhere between 16 and 18 inches, including half sizes. Some saddles may be larger or smaller, but those are not considered standard sizes.
