How to Connect Western Stirrups to English Stirrup Leathers

While the designs of western and English saddles are quite different, they do have some similarities and a lot of parts in common. Both English and western saddles have stirrups and stirrup leathers, and in a pinch you can even use western stirrups on your English saddle. Keep in mind, however, that changing the stirrups also changes your balance in the saddle, so you should put the English stirrups back on as soon as you can. But if you break a stirrup and need a quick replacement, you can borrow a set of western stirrups until you get to the tack shop.

Instructions

    • 1

Grasp the end of the stirrup leather and pull it down as far as it will go. Note the hole the prong is in so you can put it back in that same hole once the western stirrup is attached.

    • 2

Slide the prong out of the hole and pull the English stirrup off. Set the stirrup aside.

    • 3

Run the end of the stirrup leather through the western stirrup. Place the prong back in the same hole it had been in the stirrup leather.
