How to Measure a Western Horse Saddle

Horse saddles are normally measured according to the seat size. Measuring the seat size allows riders to locate and purchase saddles that they can sit in comfortably. Western saddle seat sizes range from 10 inches to 18 inches or larger. Small adults and youth typically use a 14-inch saddle; 15-inch saddles are for average size adults and 16-inch or larger saddles are for larger adults. Riding in the wrong size saddle can be uncomfortable and prevent riders from sitting in the proper riding position.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the saddle on a saddle stand. Ensure it is located on a level surface to allow the most accurate measurement.

    • 2

Place the end of the measuring tape directly behind the pommel in the center of the saddle, level with the back of the seat.

    • 3

Stretch the measuring tape out in a straight line from the center of the pommel to the back of the saddle where the stitching of the seat meets the cantle. The length that shows on the measuring tape should be between 10 and 20 inches. Some saddles are available in half sizes.
