How to Make a Halter from a Lead Rope

Using a lead rope to make a horse halter is a basic yet essential horsemanship skill. Having the ability to maintain control of the horse is important for the horse and rider. Trail riding is enjoyable and unpredictable. If the horse unexpectedly breaks its halter during the journey, knowing how to make a halter quickly can save the day. Additionally, an owner can use a lead rope to familiarize a young horse with being haltered without the confinements of a bridle, headstall and bit. A horse can be started and trained to lead properly on a loose line, reinforcing respect, personal space, responsive communication and a positive relationship.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap a lead rope over a horse's nose, and cross it under the horse's chin with the buckle falling to the horse's right side.

    • 2

Pass the buckle over the top of the withers from the right side of the horse, stopping at its left cheek.

    • 3

Open the clip, and attach it to the other end of the lead rope.

    • 4

Pull the end of the lead rope with your left hand. With your right hand, push the clip up to the horse's face. Pull the rope snug, removing all slack.

    • 5

View the halter you made from both sides of the horse, ensuring it is identical on each side. That guarantees you made the halter correctly.
