How to Build a Metal Saddle Rack

A saddle stand is necessary to keep saddles in good condition and to prevent them from becoming misshapen when stored. Store-bought saddle stands can be expensive, but making a metal stand yourself is fairly simple as long as you are proficient in welding.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 metal poles at least 2 inches in diameter and at least 12 inches high
  • 1 metal pole at least 2 inches in diameter and at least 4 inches longer than the length of the saddle
  • Scrap carpeting at least 6 inches wide and as long as the single metal pole
  • 1 metal base piece at least 8 inches wide and 15 inches long
  • Saw
  • Safety glasses
  • Welder
  • Welding mask
  • Welding gloves
  • Measuring tape
  • Marker
  • Sandpaper
  • Glue
  • 4 clamps, which expand to at least 3 inches

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the two metal poles and mark the desired height on each. The poles should be the same height and should be at least 12 inches tall to provide adequate clearance for the saddle flaps. These poles will serve as the stand's legs.

    • 2

Wear safety glasses and cut the two poles to the desired height, if necessary.

    • 3

Cut the metal support piece to its desired length, which should be at least 4 inches longer than the length of the saddle.

    • 4

Sand the cut edges of the metal to remove any shards or splinters of material.

    • 5

Put on welding shield and welding gloves.

    • 6

Weld the leg poles to the single support pole. The leg poles should attach about 5 inches in from either end of the support pole.

    • 7

Weld the other ends of the leg poles to the flat metal base piece. Be sure that the legs are centered over the base piece before attaching them.

    • 8

Cut the scrap of carpet to fit around the support piece.

    • 9

Cover the underside of the carpeting with a strong glue and wrap it around the support piece.

    • 10

Clamp the carpeting around the support and allow the glue to dry.

    • 11

Remove the clamps once the glue is dry.
