How to Properly Unhook a Horse Trailer

Horse trailers are used to transport horses to and from horse shows and trail rides, appointments with the veterinarian, and sessions with horse trainers. Even if you don't have your own horse trailer, knowing how to properly hitch and unhitch a horse trailer will help you ensure your horse's safety during transportation. If you borrow a horse trailer, you will most likely have to hitch and unhitch the trailer yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the towing vehicle and trailer in a straight line on a level surface.

    • 2

Unload all horses from the trailer.

    • 3

Set the vehicle's emergency brake and the trailer handbrake.

    • 4

Unplug the electrical connection cable and the breakaway cable. Stow the cables neatly.

    • 5

Unlock the trailer tongue anti-theft device, if it has one.

    • 6

Press the release trigger on the trailer hitch. Lift the release trigger to the up position to release the tow ball from the trailer hitch.

    • 7

Unhook the safety chains from the towing vehicle. The chains should cross beneath the trailer hitch and connect the trailer hitch to the towing vehicle. Store the chains on the trailer hitch neatly.

    • 8

Rotate the jockey wheel handle to the left until the wheel is touching the ground. Continue rotating until the trailer hitch is clear of the tow ball.

    • 9

Pull the towing vehicle away from the horse trailer.

    • 10

Place blocks of wood or wheel chocks between the trailer wheels to keep the trailer from rolling forward or backward if the handbrake fails.

    • 11

Lock the horse trailer, including any anti-theft devices on the trailer tongue.
