How to Measure a Western Saddle From the Cantle

Knowing the size of your Western saddle is important. Western saddles come in a number of seat sizes to accommodate all types of riders. If the saddle seat is too large, the saddle will not provide the security you need. If the seat is too small, it will feel uncomfortable and cramped. If you are in the market for a new saddle, measuring the seat is an essential part of the shopping process.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the saddle on a sturdy stand. Leave enough room to move around the saddle on all sides.

    • 2

Place the end of the tape measure at the stitching on the edge of the cantle. The cantle is the back part of the saddle, just behind the actual seat.

    • 3

Extend the tape measure to the front of the saddle. Measure to the front of the hole just behind the saddle horn.
