How to Tie Australian Stock Saddle

An Australian saddle combines the lightweight flexibility of an English saddle with the security and comfort of a Western version. The Australian stock saddle was designed for long and rugged rides through the outback, but this type of saddle is equally at home on less rugged terrain. As is true with any saddle, your safety and that of your mount depends on proper fitting. Check the condition of your tack before each ride, making sure the saddle is securely tied.

Instructions

Place the saddle pad on your horse's back. The saddle pad should be just behind the horse's withers. Australian stock saddles have a similar design to English saddles, and placing the saddle behind the horse's withers allows the animal to move its shoulders freely.

Sit the saddle on top of the saddle pad, again just behind the horse's withers. Walk to the left side of your horse; pull the girth down so that it is hanging straight.

    • 3

Reach underneath your horse's belly and pull the girth toward you. Pull the ends of the girth through the prongs on the saddle fitting. The girth should be just loose to allow you to place your hand between it and the horse.

Mount your horse and ride for a few minutes. Stop your horse and check the tightness of the girth. If the girth has loosened, you can tighten it while mounted. Reach down and grab the end of the saddle fitting. Pull the fitting, and place it in the next prong to make the saddle tighter and more secure.
