How to Tie an Off Billet on a Western Saddle

The off billet is an important piece of equipment on your western saddle. The off billet attaches to the girth, and if that off billet is not tied off correctly, the girth and the saddle rigging could come loose. Taking the time to check this vital piece of tack before and after every ride can improve your own safety and the safety of your horse.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the saddle on a saddle stand, or on your horse if you are ready to ride. Face the front of the stand, or the front of your horse, and move to the left hand side of the saddle.

    • 2

Locate the D ring on the saddle and slide the off billet through that ring. The long side of the off billet should be facing you, and the short side of the off billet should be on the other side of the D ring.

    • 3

Line up the two holes on each side of the off billet. Thread a piece of leather through those holes, starting with the short side --- the side that is furthest from you.

    • 4

Thread the leather through the holes closest to you. Pull the leather strap as tight as you can and tie a know to tie it off. Tie a second knot to secure the off billet and prevent it from slipping.
