How to Clean a Light Oil Western Saddle

Light oil saddles are very attractive, but they require special care. Commonly used leather conditioners like neatsfoot oil and mink oil can permanently darken light leather and leave it with blotches and spots. Fortunately, you can keep your light oil saddle looking like new by using the right supplies.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your saddle stand in an area that allows you to work on all four sides of the saddle. Place the saddle on the saddle stand with the stirrups hanging down and the cinch strap hanging down and pulled out of the way.

    • 2

Wet a soft cloth, then wring it out until it is just barely damp. You do not want to get the leather too wet.

    • 3

Clean any muddy or dirty spots on the saddle with the damp cloth, then immediately dry the leather with a soft cloth. Continue working on the saddle until you have removed all caked-on mud and dirt.

    • 4

Dip a damp cloth in saddle soap and work up a good lather. Clean one section of the saddle at a time, allowing the saddle soap to soak into the leather for about five minutes, then wiping away any excess with a soft cloth. Change cloths when the one you are using becomes soiled.

    • 5

Clean the entire saddle one section at the time. Continue cleaning the saddle until the entire surface is cleaned.
