How to Choose Clippers for Horse Clipping

Every horse owner needs a good pair of clippers to keep her horse well groomed and healthy. There are a number of different reasons to clip a horse and a number of different ways to go about it, all requiring the right clippers for the job. Deciding which clippers are best for your purposes may seem daunting, but a little preparation can go a long way in making this task a simple one.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine a price range. There are hundreds of horse clippers on the market, all in different price ranges. With the variety available, you should be able to find a good pair of clippers in whatever price range you choose.

    • 2

Decide what the main purpose of your clippers will be. This will help you narrow down the number of choices, as someone just looking to trim the occasional bridle path won't need the same clippers as someone regularly body clipping their horse. For light trimming, select clippers labeled as "trimmers." For heavier clipping, select larger clippers labeled for body clipping.

Determine how frequently you will be clipping. If you are only going to be doing so occasionally, you won't need professional-grade clippers and can probably get away with purchasing less powerful clippers. If, however, you have an entire barn of show horses to groom, you will want to go with more powerful clippers labeled for professional use.
