How to Unload a Horse From a Trailer Properly

If you plan to show your horse or go trail riding with friends, you will need to teach your animal to load and unload from the trailer safely. Many horses are frightened of trailers, either due to a past traumatic experience or just a natural fear of small enclosed places. Teaching your horse to be comfortable with the trailer is part of your job as a horse owner, since this practice will make your horse safer to be around.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the trailer on a spot that is as flat as possible. That will make it easier to unload the horse safely.

    • 2

Open the front access door of the trailer and check to make sure the horse is still tied. Check the trailer tie to make sure it is secure.

    • 3

Unlatch the rear door of the trailer as quietly as possible. Avoid any sudden movements that could startle the horse.

    • 4

Enter the trailer from the back and reassure your horse with a pat on the neck. Carefully reach over and untie the horse. Back the horse slowly out of the trailer if you are using a standard straight load trailer. Turn the horse around and lead him off carefully if you are using a stock type trailer.
