How to Measure a Horse for Blanket Size

A blanket keeps your horse warm in the winter and keep it from growing excess hair if the blanket is left on for extended periods. Show horses often wear blankets all winter to impede the growth of hair, which makes them easier to groom and clip for shows. It is important to measure your horse for a blanket that fits correctly. A blanket that is too small restricts his movements and can cause him to panic and tear the blanket. A blanket that is too large catches on items and may tear and trip him, causing an accident.

Open the snap on a lead rope and attach it to the horses halter. Tie the lead rope to a secure area so your horse stands still.

Move your horse by applying pressure against each leg so that her weight is equally distributed on all four feet.

Place the tip of a horse height and weight tape on the center of her chest where her neck meets her chest. Stretch the tape along her side around the widest point of her shoulder to her rear end. You may need a friend to help with the measuring. Read the measurement in inches where her tail meets her hindquarter.
