How to Put on a Western Saddle Girth

No matter what style of riding you prefer or what breed of horse you own, having the right equipment is critical to both your safety and that of your equine partner. Taking the time to attach the girth properly and make sure it is the proper size enhances your safety and the comfort of your horse. Not only is ill-fitting tack dangerous, it is uncomfortable for you and your horse.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the saddle on a sturdy saddle stand that allows you to move freely on both sides of the saddle. It is easier to attach the girth if the saddle is sitting on a stable surface.

    • 2

Walk to the left side of the saddle as you face the saddle stand. Locate the small strip of leather hanging off the saddle ring. This strip of leather has holes punched in it to make it easier to attach the girth.

    • 3

Slide the leather strap through the ring on the girth. Attach the buckle on the girth to one of the holes on the leather strap.

    • 4

Flip the girth and the stirrup up over the saddle seat. Place a saddle pad on your horse and sit the saddle on the saddle pad.

    • 5

Walk to the off side (left side) of your horse and flip the girth and the stirrup down. Walk around to the near (right) side of the horse and reach under its belly to grab the girth. If the girth is not long enough to reach the near side, you will need to lower the girth into the next hole on the off side. If the girth is too long, you will need to take the girth up to the next hole.
