How to Measure Western Cinch Sizes

Horses come in all shapes and sizes. Each horse, then, needs to be measured for the correct cinch size, to make sure that the western saddle equipment that you place on the horse will be comfortable. If the cinch is too tight, it will rub the horse and hurt the animal. If the cinch is too loose, the saddle might slide and the rider could get injured. A properly fitting cinch is a must when you are riding.

Instructions

    • 1

Find someplace in the barnyard where the ground is completely level and the horse can stand comfortably and steadily.

    • 2

Place the horse on the level area and have someone hold it so it will stand completely still. Have the person talk to the horse and feed it treats to keep it calm and happy. Collect a long lead rope to help measure the horse.

    • 3

Place one person beside the horse's right front shoulder and another person beside the horse's front left shoulder. The person at the head of the horse should continue to talk to and sooth the horse while holding it.

    • 4

Straighten out the lead rope. Pass the lead rope under the horse's girth area and make sure to measure up to where the bottom of the western saddle would be located. Place the saddle on the horse if you need to know the exact location the saddle would rest in. Knot the rope on both sides of the horse to show where the horse's girth is located.

    • 5

Remove the saddle from the horse; move the lead rope away from the horse. Remove the horse from the area.

    • 6

Lay the lead rope out flat. Measure from one end of the marked lead rope to the other end. This is the width that you will need for your western cinch.
