How do I Fit a Bosal?

While most riders use a snaffle or curb bit, others prefer to use a hackamore. However, for the hackamore to be used effectively, the bosal --- the part around the horse's nose --- must fit correctly.
  1. Nose Placement

    • The bosal should go on the spot where the nasal bone joins the cartilage. You can easily find this spot by running your hand down the horse's face and noticing the change in texture.

    Knot Placement

    • The heel knot should hang away from the horse's chin. This knot should be placed so that it lifts slightly before the cheeks come in contact with the horse's chin.

    Adjustment

    • After positioning the bosal on the horse, you can make slight adjustments. A bosal placed slightly lower on the horse's nose provides more leverage, while one placed slightly higher on the nose allows less movement. A bosal that fits too loosely can be tightened by wrapping the reins or mecate around it an additional time. One that fits too tightly should be exchanged for a larger size. Horseman Rick Gore recommends a bosal shaper to aid fitting.
