How to Measure for a Western Helmet Size

Riding helmets are useful safety tools in Western riding disciplines such as barrel racing and reining. Helmets can be purchased in a variety of styles and colors depending on rider preference. Helmets should be certified by the American Society for Testing and Materials and Safety Equipment Institute.

Proper fit is imperative in choosing a helmet. Fit should be snug but not tight enough to cause a headache if worn for any length of time; helmet should never slip or move on the head.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a tailor's measuring tape to measure the circumference of the head. Tape should be placed just above the ears and eyebrows, but not touching them.

    • 2

Determine the hat size that applies based upon that measurement. If the head measures 20 inches, hat size is 6 1/2. For each half inch, add 1/8 to the hat size. For example, a measurement of 21 inches would require a hat size of 6 3/4.

    • 3

Determine which size applies to the hat size for helmets sized small, medium, and large. Smalls fit hat size 6 7/8 or smaller or less than 21 1/2 inches. Mediums range from hat size 7 to 7 1/4 or 22 to 22 3/4 inches. Any bigger measurement will be a large. These are standard sizes which should work for any helmet.
