Instructions for Tying a Rope Halter

A halter slips over the horse's head and is a useful tool for transporting the animal between the stall, pasture and horse trailer. Halters are often made of nylon or leather, but rope halters are also a popular choice. Tying your own rope halter allows you to create a custom item for your equine companion.

Instructions

    • 1

Heat each end of the rope over the flame of a lighter or small torch. This will melt the fibers of the rope and prevent fraying.

    • 2

Form a loop at one end of the rope, folding the rope in half and wrapping it around itself. Push the end of the loop through the hole created in the center and pull firmly to secure the first knot.

    • 3

Move 18 inches down the rope, forming another loop as you did in Step 2. The length of rope between the knots is called a nose piece and the two knots come together under the horse's chin to help hold the halter on the head.

    • 4

Lay the nose piece on the nose, halfway between the bottom of the eye and the nostrils and thread the free end of the rope behind the ears. Run the end of the rope through each loop under the chin and pull gently to tighten the halter. Coil the remainder of the rope in your hand to keep it from dragging the ground as the horse is transported.
