How to Build a Saddle Stand

Saddles are key pieces of riding equipment if you want to have a comfortable and successful ride for both yourself and the horse. In order to maintain the integrity of these crucial pieces, you need to handle your saddle with care when moving and storing it. This is where a saddle stand can come in handy because the stand allows you to rest the saddle on its angled top and can be used to hold the saddle steady in a car or in a stable.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two pieces of wood on a table saw to 2-feet tall by 1-foot wide to make the end panels of the stand. You need to round off the top corners of both panels on the saw, so they resemble tombstones.

    • 2

Make two panels that are 2-feet long and 9 1/2-inches tall to serves as the side panels of the stand.

    • 3

Create the bottom of the stand by cutting another panel 21 3/4 inches long and 12 inches wide. This panel will help the stand keep its shape true.

    • 4

Make slats for the top of the stand by cutting out seven strips of wood to 2 inches wide and 24 inches long.

    • 5

Lay the bottom panel flat on a table and arrange the end panels against the short sides of the bottom panel. The end panels should be perpendicular to the bottom panel, with the rounded ends upward.

    • 6

Drill through the bottom edge of the end panels with a power drill and screws to secure them to the bottom panel. Use two screws, one at each end.

    • 7

Stand the side panels against the end and bottom panels to create a box shape. Attach theses panels to the stand in the same way as you did with the end panels.

    • 8

Set one of the top slats, so it is flat with each end resting on the highest point of each of the rounded end panels. Drill one screw through each end to mount the slat in place.

    • 9

Attach three panels to either side of the first one. The slats should be 5/16-inch apart from each other. This will create the top of the stand for the saddle to rest on.

    • 10

Fill each of the screw head holes with wood filler and sand the entire stand with sandpaper. Coat the stand with three layers of polyurethane sealer coating.
