How to Build a Horse Stall Grill

Grills in a horse stall improve the light and ventilation compared with stalls that have solid sides from floor to ceiling. Grills are often placed only on the sides of the stall that front a hallway or alleyway. Placing grill work between two stalls can lead to problems if incompatible horses are placed in adjoining stalls. The grills or stall guards are usually made of steel or iron. Construction requires metal-working tools.

Instructions

Measure the space for the grill. Include the length and height of the grill as well as the width of the stall wall material the grill will sit on. Cut a two U-channel piece of steel to the length of the necessary stall grill. Use U-channel steel with an opening equal to the width of the stall wall materials where the grill attaches.

Cut 1/2-inch steel bars to fit between the top and bottom U-channels when installed in the stall wall. Calculate the number of steel bars by dividing the length of the grill in inches by four and adding one for the end rod in the grill.

Weld the 1/2-inch steel bars to the top and bottom U-channel with the bars placed 4 inches on center. Grind off any rough edges of the weld that could scratch or cut the horse.

Mount the grill in the stall wall. Drill holes through the bottom and top U-channel. Use 2-inch galvanized deck screws to fasten the grill to the wooden portions of the stall wall.
