How to Fit a Blanket for a Horse

Blanketing is an excellent way to protect your horse from the elements and keep his coat sleek and shiny, but you need to make sure the blanket you choose fits properly. If the blanket is too small, it will not be comfortable for your horse. If the blanket is too large, your horse could become entangled in the straps and injure himself.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand your horse on a level surface. The measurement will be much more accurate if the horse remains on level ground.

    • 2

Take your soft measuring tape and place it at the point where the horse's neck meets the center of his chest.

    • 3

Measure diagonally from this point to the horse's buttocks, about 10 to 12 inches below where his tail meets his body. It is a good idea to have someone help you take the measurement.

    • 4

Note the number of inches on the tape. This is the size blanket you need to purchase. Horse blankets come in even sizes ranging from 30 for foals to 88 for draft horses; if the measurement of your horse is an odd number, go up one size.
