How to Measure Miniature Horse Halters

A proper fitting miniature horse halter is a necessary piece of tack. Stock halters are the most commonly used halters. They are used for training young foals, safely leading miniature horses from one location to another, and for maintaining control while you groom or work with the horse. Show halters are often custom made to fit each miniature horse and are designed to accent the facial features. Because miniature horses can have major variations in head size, measuring for a miniature halter is the best way to get a proper fit.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your miniature horse in a safe enclosure, such as a stall or fenced in paddock.

    • 2

Place a lead rope loosely around the horse's neck to keep him still. You can do this, or have someone else do it.

    • 3

Remove the miniature horse's halter if he is wearing one.

    • 4

Measure for a stock halter by placing the end of the cloth measuring tape at the cheek bone, which is located a few fingers width from the corner of the miniature horse's mouth.

    • 5

Wrap the measuring tape gently over the horse's nose to the opposite cheekbone, and under the jaw until it meets the end of the measuring tape.

    • 6

      Record the nose measurement.

    • 7

Place the end of the measuring tape at the same location on one of the cheekbones as you did in step 4.

    • 8

Wrap the measuring tape gently behind the ears and back down to the opposite cheekbone to get the "poll" measurement. The poll is the term commonly used when referencing the area behind the ears. In measuring halters and bridles, the poll measurement is the length of the piece that covers the cheeks and behind the ears.

      Record the "poll" measurement.
