Instructions
Locate the horse's shoulder. If it cannot be seen, have the horse lift a leg so the bone can be seen. Place a hand on the horse at the shoulder and then measure two fingers down from the shoulder. This will be the ideal location for the English saddle.
Place the wire against the horse at the spot two fingers below the shoulder. Bend the wire so it moves from one side of the horse's back to the other side and it shows the outline of the horse's back. The wire should be approximately 20 inches to 25 inches long.
Move the wire to the cardboard and trace it so the shape of the horse's back can be seen. Write which side was which on the cardboard to avoid confusion or problems when searching for the saddle.
Buy a saddle that fits the measurements of the horses back. The outline can be used to determine if the saddle is too large or small before purchase.
Try the saddle on the horse. Make sure the horse is standing on flat land, and then place the saddle on the horse's back. Check that the saddle fits on the shoulders. Put some pressure on the saddle and look to make sure the saddle does not have gaps, bridges or other spaces. It should be flat on the horse's back. Check that the saddle is not pinching the horse at the withers.
Make sure the saddle is comfortable for the rider. English saddles should be sat on and checked for rider comfort. Make sure the space behind the rider is comfortable. In general, English saddles should have about 3 to 4 inches of space behind the rider for comfort. A saddle that is too large or small for the rider should be replaced with a saddle that fits both the horse and rider.
