Rope Halter
-
A rope halter is an essential piece of training equipment, and it is also one of the easiest halters to use. Slip the rope halter over the horse's head, and then tie the throat latch strap to secure the halter. Rope halters use specially placed knots to apply pressure to various parts of the horse's head, making it easier to control its movements precisely during training. Never turn a horse out while it is wearing a rope halter, however. A rope halter will not give, and the horse could get hung up on a fencepost or other solid object.
Breakaway Halter
-
If your horse needs to wear a halter when turned out, the best choice is a breakaway halter. A breakaway halter is specially designed to break if the horse becomes hung up on the fence, providing an additional level of protection for horses in the pasture. Breakaway halters are also easy to put on--simply slip the halter over the top of the horse's head and secure the throat latch with the buckle.
Leather Halters
-
Leather halters are often seen on show horses as they compete in halter and showmanship classes. A well designed leather halter is durable and easy to work with. Many show halters have an ornate buckle that attaches over the top of the horse's head, and all you need to do is place the horse's nose through the bottom of the halter and fasten the buckle.
