How to Measure Horse Boots

Boots are designed to protect certain parts of your horse's legs, whether it's his hooves, lower legs or knees. If your horse competes at speed, performs maneuvers that require crossing the legs or is very active during turn-out, you may need to add boots to your tack. Proper fit of these boots is essential to get the protection they are designed to provide, as too-big boots can slip down and too-small boots are not going to adequately cover the leg. Also, too-small boots can cut off your horse's circulation in the legs or strain the tendons.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie or cross-tie your horse to prevent him from moving around as you try to take the measurements.

    • 2

Stretch the cloth tape measure from just below your horse's knee joint to just above the fetlock (ankle) joint.

    • 3

Measure the widest part of your horse's fetlock joint.

    • 4

Compare these measurements to the boots you are considering purchasing. If one measurement requires, for example, a size large boot and one measurement fits the medium size, go ahead with the bigger size.
