Saddle Seat Size
-
Determine the correct seat fit for yourself, otherwise called "seat size." This varies according to the size of the rider. English saddles run smaller then Western saddles, so for example, if you use a 15-inch Western saddle you will probably need an 17-inch English saddle. Sizes 17 inches and below are considered junior. sizes or small adult. Sizes 18 inches and above would be for a larger adult rider. The most popular English saddle size is 17 to 17.5 inches. A good way to determine your seat size is to go to a tack store and try sitting on different sized saddles. You should have at least 3 inches in front and behind you if the seat is the correct size.
Saddle Width
-
English saddles come in a variety of widths to fit the width of the horse's back. They are narrow (N), medium (M), wide (W) and extra-wide (EW). This fit is determined by the size and appearance of the horse's back. Looking down on your horse from above, you should be able to determine if the horse is narrow, medium, wide or extra wide. The average horse will require a size medium while a draft horse may require a wide or extra-wide. Some breeds such as Arabians and ponies may use a narrow width. Many saddle manufacturers only produce saddle widths in size medium and wide as those are the two most common horse saddle widths.
Wither Tracing
-
For the ultimate custom-fitted saddle, many English saddle companies recommend making a tracing of your horse's wither. Use a piece of wire or artist flexicurve, and starting at the back of the wither (where the front of the saddle would sit), mold it firmly across the withers of the horse. Place the wire on a piece of paper and trace around it with a black magic marker. Once the tracing is finished, mail or fax to the saddle manufacturer of your choice.
