How to Measure for Renegade Hoof Boots

Renegade boots give a horse support by providing a solid, flat surface for its hooves. Small, bumpy spots will not throw a boot-wearing horse out of gait. The boots, which are glued to the hooves, also protect the tender undersides.

Instructions

  1. Taking Measurements

    • 1

Lift the horse's foot. Step around the folded-up foot and place it between your knees to stabilize it. You can also use a farrier's stand, a device that holds a hoof in place.

    • 2

Measure the hoof from side to side at the widest point to the closest 1/16 inch. Note the width measurement.

    • 3

Measure the hoof from the center front point to the center of the buttresses--the solid area on each side of the hoof--until they reach the frogs--a triangular pad that splits near the back of the hoof. Record the hoof length.

    • 4

Measure the other hooves, noting them as right-front, left-front, left-rear and right rear.

    Application of Measurements/Adjustments

    • 5

Add 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch to the hoof for the correct boot length.

    • 6

Match the width measurement to the sizing chart for Renegade hoof boots. If the hoof is wider than a given boot size, choose the next larger size. A boot that is too narrow can cause pain and stumbling.

    • 7

Determine if the hoof fits the width of the boot but the length of the boot is more than needed. In that case, Renegade will trim the back of the boot by up to 3/8 inch.
