How to Choose a Turnout Horse Blanket

Depending on where you live and the type of weather you experience, your horse might benefit from wearing a turnout blanket. A quality horse blanket protects your horse when the weather turns cold and chilly. A good blanket also protects your horse's glossy coat and prevents the growth of a shaggy winter coat on show horses. But no matter what the reason, it is important to choose a well fitted blanket for your equine companion.

Decide whether you need a light turnout sheet or a heavy, waterproof turnout blanket. If the weather is very cold and damp, a waterproof turnout blanket provides vital protection. While horses can withstand very cold weather, remaining wet in extremely cold weather can leave them vulnerable to illness.

Make sure the blanket you choose is waterproof and insulated. The purpose of a turnout blanket is to keep your horse warm and dry, so make sure the blanket is designed to keep moisture away.

Measure your horse carefully to determine what size turnout blanket he needs. To measure for a horse blanket, use a soft tape measure (the kind tailors use). Have a helper hold one end in the middle of the horse's chest. Extend the tape to the horse's tail by moving along his side.

Note the reading on the tape--this is the size blanket you need. For instance, if your horse measures 80" from chest to tail, you need an 80" turnout blanket.
