Things You'll Need
- Flat surface
- Halter
- Stitching awl
- Nameplate
- Mounting hardware that is sold with nameplate
- Masking tape
- Ball-peen hammer
Instructions
Place the halter on a flat surface with the cheek piece facing upward. The cheek piece is the long, flat piece of leather that lies against the side of the horse's face when he is wearing the halter.
Position the nameplate in the middle of the halter's cheek piece and make sure it is straight. Insert a stitching awl through the hole at the end of the nameplate and straight into the leather of the halter. This will give you a mark you can use to attach the mounting hardware.
Repeat the marking process by placing the awl through the mounting hole on the other side of the nameplate. Remove the nameplate and set it aside. Make sure the leather on the halter has two readily identifiable marks for each end of the nameplate.
Place the awl tip against the first mark and use a ball-peen hammer to tap it through the leather. Repeat the process with the second mark.
Place the nameplate back on the cheek piece and line up the attachment holes with the holes made by the awl. Hammer the mounting pins through the attachment holes on the nameplate and the holes on the halter.
Cover the heads of the mounting pins with masking tape. This will protect the brass from damage when fastening the plate to the halter. Turn the halter over so that the underside of the cheek piece is facing up. Place the caps over the pins so that they lock into place. Repeat the process at the other end of the nameplate.
