How to Install Non-Climb Horse Fencing

Non-Climb Fence is a commercial product of the Red Brand fence company. The fence is woven wire mesh with 2-by-4 inch mesh. According to the manufacturer, it is designed to prevent horses from damaging the fence by stepping on it. According to the University of Illinois Extension, the Non-Climb fence should be used in low traffic portions of horse pastures. It has an advantage of a lower cost than the v-mesh woven wire fence and requires less maintenance than wood fences. A disadvantage is that the hooves of foals and ponies can become entangled in the wire.

Instructions

    • 1

Stake out the horse fence. Mark the location of each corner and line post. Corner posts are located any place where the fence changes direction. Line posts are placed between 6 and 10 foot intervals between corner posts.

    • 2

Dig corner post holes with a post hole auger. Corner posts should be as deep as possible with a minimum depth of 42 inches. Set the posts in concrete for stability. Dig post holes at least 30 inches deep for the line posts. Set the posts in the ground by tamping dirt around the post. Allow the concrete to set completely before adding wire.

    • 3

Wrap the end of the fence wire around a corner post and fasten in place with fencing staples. Roll the fence material along the fence line to the next corner post. Use a fence stretcher to pull the fence tight along the line. Fasten the fence to each post with four or five fencing staples.

    • 4

Continue to place roll out the fence along the next segment of fence and fasten the non-climb fence wire to the posts.
