Tying Horse Rope Halters
Measure and tie the first simple knot 30 inches from the end of the rope for the right ear knot. To tie a simple knot cross one side of the rope over the remaining rope making a loop. Pull the end of the rope through the loop that has been created and pull tight. This type of knot is used for all knots in the halter.
Measure from that knot 9 inches to the right moving down the length of the rope. Tie the next simple knot for the right nose knot.
Measure 10 inches farther on the rope and tie a simple knot for the left nose knot.
Measure 33 inches from the left nose knot and tie a simple knot for the throat latch knot
Measure 10 more inches on the rope and tie a knot. If all knots are measured and placed properly this knot should be in the approximate middle of the entire length of rope.
Loosen the left nose knot enough that that the end of the rope can be maneuvered into the knot and tie a second knot in the rope around the original knot. Leave 10 inches of rope length between the tie loop and the new left nose knot.
Loosen the right nose knot and maneuver the end of the rope through the center of the knot and tie an additional right nose knot over the existing one. There should now be a double rope for the portion of the halter that will sit over the horse's nose.
Bring the loose end of the rope back to the throat latch knot after finishing the second right nose knot. Loosen the throat latch knot and tie into it with the rope using the same manner as the right nose knot. Leave 33 inches of rope between the right nose knot and the throat latch knot.
Measure 10 inches from the throat latch knot on the remaining rope and tie into the right ear knot by loosening the original right ear knot and placing the rope through the center and tying and additional knot around it. Both ends of the rope should now be on the right side of the halter.
Gather the two sections of 33 inches and tie them together in a big knot to create the loops for the lead line to attach to under the chin of the horse.
Trim the ends of the rope to the same length. Make sure enough rope is left to secure the halter onto the horse but not so much that it is difficult to maneuver when haltering.
Light a match and melt the ends of the polyester rope to prevent it from unraveling.
