How to Convert a Single Harness Into a Team Harness

A rider who is working with an individual horse should fit the animal with a single harness. Such a harness structure features a bridle and padding, among other components. Riding with two or more horses, however, means fitting them with a team harness. Multiple single harnesses will not do as they lack several additional components that unite the horses as a team. To convert a single harness into one appropriate for a team, you must tailor it with new equipment.

Attach hames to the single harness. Hames are strips of wood or steel positioned at the front of the harness that distribute pressure evenly among a team of horses to absorb their pull. Most hames come equipped with ratchets that can be tied onto the front straps of a harness, including the breast strap or the forward side strap.

Attach D-rings to the collar for a single harness. The D-ring is a snaffle bit that attaches to the hames on the harness; it is frequently used for working and team horses. Open the straps that hold the current bit in the collar. Replace the bit with a D-ring then fasten the straps.

Purchase a team conversion collar. These collars fit over single harnesses to instantly convert them into team harnesses. Some retailers require that you measure your horse's neck to find the best-sized conversion collar for it.
