How to Clean a Neoprene Saddle

Neoprene is a lightweight synthetic material often used for seat coverings in cars. The benefits of neoprene have been noticed by horse owners resulting in an increase in popularity of neoprene saddles. Neoprene saddle cinches grip the horse better than other materials. This means that you can set them somewhat looser than you would with other types of material. Neoprene saddles do not attract burrs, burdock, grass, mud or dirt, making them easier to maintain than other saddles.

Remove the saddle from the horse and hang it from a hook or set it on the ground. Attach a nozzle to the end of the hose that creates a concentrated stream of water pressure. Adjust the nozzle to its highest pressure setting and spray the saddle. Neoprene is not a clingy material, so most of the dirt, hair and grime comes off during the rinse.

Examine the nooks of the saddle and use your fingers to remove wedged-in remaining dirt and hair. Set the hose nozzle to a low pressure setting and spray the saddle while you rub off the wedged-in hair and grime.

Apply horse shampoo to the saddle and gently massage it into a lather. Rinse all the shampoo off the saddle using low water pressure. Examine the cleanliness of the saddle. If the saddle is not clean enough, reapply the horse shampoo to the saddle as before and rinse the shampoo off.

Hang the saddle to dry or set it on a clean dry towel where no dirt or debris will blow onto it.
