How to Sew Leg Straps Onto a Horse Blanket

Providing the essentials for your horse--food, water, protection--can be a costly endeavor, but there are ways to ease the financial burden. For protection, winter blankets are necessary in colder weather but often become damaged with regular wear. Leg straps are necessary to keep the blanket in place, particularly if the horse is turned out in a larger area, and they're usually the first part of the blanket to suffer damage. With a basic knowledge of sewing, you can easily replace these important straps and save your valuable winter blankets without using a commercial repair service.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the blanket. Inspect the blanket for debris and dirt in the area to be sewn. If needed, clean and thoroughly dry the blanket.

    • 2

Attach the replacement buckles into the nylon strapping. Depending on the style of buckle, you can accomplish this either by threading the strapping through the buckle and back through itself or by sewing into the end of the strapping.

    • 3

Choose thread that matches the color of your blanket.

    • 4

Sew the straps onto the blanket. Sew the straps back into place, making sure to sew from the underside of the blanket using a straight stitch. A straight stitch is achieved by knotting the end of the thread and then weaving the thread in and out of the fabric. Pull stitches tight, but be careful to not allow the blanket to bunch up. Knot the other end and cut the thread.
