How to Make Your Own Horse Sport Boot Covers

Horses wear sports boots to protect their legs during work. Horses' legs are particularly susceptible to strain and injury, as they carry a large amount of weight over a small joint. Some boots are designed to provide extra support for the tendons, while others prevent a clumsy horse from striking itself with a shoe and causing an injury. Boots should be kept clean and dry to prevent them from rubbing the horse's legs, and when not in use should be stored away from damp and dust. Making your own covers will help protect these expensive pieces of equipment and prolong their life. Breathable materials such as cotton or gore-tex are ideal for this project.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and length of the boots. Measure and cut a rectangle of fabric that's 6 inches wider than the boots and 3 times as long.

    • 2

Along both short edges of the rectangle, turn in a double half-inch hem. Pin to hold it in place, then machine sew. Turn the fabric so that the folded side of the hem lies uppermost.

    • 3

Fold the fabric roughly into thirds by bringing the bottom hem up into the middle of the rectangle and the top hem down to meet the bottom edge. You are creating a fabric envelope with a fold-over flap. Adjust the proportions so that the bag part is just longer than the length of the boots, and there is a good overlap on the flap. Unfold the flap, and pin the sides of the bag together.

    • 4

Machine sew the sides of the bag, and turn it the right way round. Sew a piece of Velcro onto the center underneath the flap, and a corresponding piece onto the top of the bag.
